Published: 04:02PM May 7th, 2009

Chelsey Slosar is a hard-working and talented student who has dedicated her time and efforts to a multitude of activities.

Described as a caring and genuine person, Slosar has left her mark on several school and community organizations. Her teachers say she has impressed them equally with her intelligent classroom work and her selfless involvement outside the classroom.

“She is one of those exceptional, dedicated and over-achieving students we all hear about from time to time,” said Debra Kaiser, one of Slosar’s middle school teachers. “Chelsey is, simply stated, extraordinary.

“I worry that she does too much and she tells me not to worry — she loves life and holds great compassion for others.”

Among Slosar’s involvements are being co-president of the school’s Habitat for Humanity chapter. She said it was challenging because she didn’t have any construction experience, but “you have to go with a can-do attitude.”

The club’s membership grew this year from 15 to 50, and it’s now one of the largest in Pierce County.

Slosar said she enjoys helping the Habitat families, who also are involved in the construction process.

“It’s a privilege and an honor to work by their side,” she said.

Maggie Fultz, the club’s adviser, said Slosar’s involvement has been a boost to the club.

“Not many people could be involved in as many activities as she is and balance them with as much grace as she demonstrates on a daily basis,” Fultz said.

As a DECA member, Slosar was a state finalist in a solo competition and has participated in numerous club activities and leadership conferences. She not only took many business-related classes, she applied her knowledge by working as a barista and being a shift manager.

Slosar also has worked as a nanny since she was 12, earning respect from the parents of the children entrusted in her care.

Her diverse involvements range from service clubs and church youth group leadership to helping the homeless and being a member of the school’s wind symphony.

“I’ve tried to get my feet into anything I can, and do my best,” she said. “It’s hard for me to say no to things. I enjoy being busy and involved.”

Slosar plans to study veterinary medicine and business administration in college, with a goal of owning a large-animal veterinary practice.

An avid horse rider, she has been helping at her uncle’s ranch, driving 45 minutes each way to help care for horses.

“It’s my favorite place to be,” she said. “I’ve loved animals my whole life.”
