KP Middle School teacher wins Golden Apple award

Cindy Knisely to be featured with other winners on TV

Special to the Gateway

Published: 11:51AM November 25th, 2009

Key Peninsula Middle School teacher Cindy L. Knisely received KCTS Channel 9’s Stanley O. McNaughton Golden Apple Award in the school’s library last Wednesday.

Dr. Jim Menzies, senior education representative of PEMCO Insurance, and Richard R. Rock of Scholl Employees Credit Union of Washington, made the presentation. Both organizations are affiliated with KCTS Channel 9.

As a NASA Explorer School, KPMS promotes science, technology, engineering and math.

Knisely, a language arts teacher, teaches those subjects and serves as a member of the school’s NASA Teacher Team and as a NASA Explorer School outreach coordinator.

She designed and teaches a popular elective called “Mission Specialist” in which students learn about subjects from robotics to rocketry. She also coordinates NASA family nights and accompanies students on trips across the country to learn alongside real scientists.

Knisely and other Golden Apple winners will be honored in a ceremony Jan. 15 in Seattle. The winners also will be featured in a broadcast on public TV stations statewide in February.
