Class of 2009 will be challenged

Published: 01:56PM June 17th, 2009

THE PENINSULA School District celebrated its annual commencement ceremony last weekend by releasing more than 700 high school graduates into the world. The inspiring event signaled a fresh wave of confidence as we continue to work our way out of a nationwide economic depression.

It’ll be a difficult task, for sure. While there are small signs of recovery, the state unemployment rate reached the national average of 9.4 percent last month. Jobs are scarce, and competition is tightening.

But there’s hope. As we look to the future, these graduates could hold the key to a surge in our economy. As they prepare for their next venture — whether it be post-secondary education or the workforce — there are those with extended training in much-needed fields such as nursing, engineering or computer science that could open doors to new technologies.

We’ve watched them grow from toddlers to high school graduates, and we’ll continue to watch them succeed.
