Enjoy one last summer weekend

Published: 02:09PM September 23rd, 2009

DON’T PACK up those shorts and sunglasses just yet. While fall officially arrived Tuesday afternoon, we’ll have at least one more weekend full of sun — and plenty of outdoor activities. Take our advice and enjoy one of these events before the temperatures fall and the rain returns to the Northwest.

Harbor Hounds — Grab man’s best friend and take him or her for a walk along Harborview Drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Register at either Donkey Creek Park or Skansie Brothers Park and be eligible for one of many prizes.

Chowder Cookoff — The ninth annual Chowder Cookoff will wrap up the Gig Harbor Farmers Market for the season at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kimball Drive Park & Ride. Seven local restaurants will participate for first-, second- and third-place awards, and attendees will have an opportunity to vote for a People’s Choice award.

National Public Lands Day — Bring a pair of gloves and shears and head to Sehmel Homestead Park, 10123 78th Ave. NW and Sehmel Drive NW in Gig Harbor, and volunteer for the Peninsula Metropolitan Parks Department from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help remove weeds and improve trails. If you do, you’ll be part of the country’s biggest single-day effort to improve public property.
