HUGH MCMILLAN/SPECIAL TO THE GATEWAY

As always, on the first Saturday after the Fourth of July, the Key Peninsula Lions Club’s Volkssport Club sponsored its annual Volksmarch. This one was its 25th annual and was held on Key Pen Parks’ 360 Trail Park with a startup site at Key Pen Park’s adjacent Gateway Park. A total of 103 walkers enjoyed the trek in the cool of overcast skies, which held off on the rain until the walk wound down and the 103rd walker checked in.

Previous KP Lions’ volksmarches have been around Burley Lagoon, Penrose Point State Park, a tour of Home launched from the KP Middle School, a march initiated at the Lind property in Home passing through historic Home Cemetery, and the then-newly-acquired Haley State Park property to the sea.

This march is a 10K, a 6.2 mile journey through beautiful wooded trails — but is not suitable for wheelchairs or children’s strollers. The march is manned at its Start/Stop site and at its halfway point, at each of which water and restroom facilities must be available.

This year’s Lions team was made up of Chair Neal Vandervoorn, Sam Woods, George and Cindy Robison, Linda Dorothy Johnson, and, at the halfway point, Hal Wolverton.

The activity is open to the public and over the years has had walkers from Sweden, Italy, Germany and Canada as well as several other U.S. states.

The Lions encourage anyone interested in more information to contact Vandervoorn at 253-857-3655.
