Brianna Lewis is one of the few members of her family to finish high school. Instead of giving up and dropping out, she persevered — and is now looking forward to continuing her education at a community college.
“She is taking responsibility for herself and her future,” said Henderson Bay High School’s office manager, Cindy Lippert. “She has overcome adversities in her life that no one should have dealt with, let alone so young. Brianna takes the high road and is a strong believer in doing what is right, which is shown in her strong work ethic.”
Lewis has dedicated a big part of her time to volunteer and community service. She is active in various activities at Fox Island Alliance Church, including Vacation Bible School, preschool and nursery. She loves working with children.
“I love seeing kids grow up in front of my eyes. They’re the highlight of my day,” she says.
In addition to working with young children through her church, Lewis has worked at the child care center on the Henderson Bay campus.
“Brianna works very hard and of all the young people I have hired, she has an amazing work ethic for such a young person,” said Margaret Loe, director of the Cottesmore Child Development Center at Henderson.
Lewis’ community service projects have ranged from Adopt-A-Road cleanup to helping out at a Halloween event. “I love doing community service. I feel so many people have helped me, I love giving back,” she said.
One of her most memorable experiences were two mission trips to Mexico through her church. She helped organize camps, paint churches and build a home for a family. She raised money for last summer’s trip on her own by working and saving.
Youth ministry co-director Chelsey Scherich said Lewis’ positive attitude and willingness to step out of her comfort zone during that trip helped Lewis “grow spiritually, emotionally and intellectually.”
“The top qualities I have been able to see in Brianna include her work ethic, her teachable spirit and her willingness to try new things,” she said. “On top of these outstanding qualities, she is kind, has a good sense of humor and an infectious laugh.”
Lewis plans to turn her passion for children into a career. She hopes to study early childhood development at Clover Park Technical College with the goal of becoming a preschool teacher.
