Logan Carroll

Gig Harbor High senior is top athlete and academic, dedicated to his faith and serving others

April 23, 2014

Logan Carroll has been described as a compassionate and hardworking young man who is admired by peers and adults. A top athlete and scholar, he has pursued a well-rounded list of interests that include community and church leadership activities, sciences and coaching.

Carroll is the cross-country state champion and was on the Gig Harbor High team that won nationals this year — one of the best teams in Gig Harbor High School history.

“His talent alone isn’t what sets Logan apart. Our team didn’t win nationals this year because Logan ran so well,” said GHHS head cross-country coach Mark Wieczorek. “Our team won nationals because of how well the rest of his teammates ran as a result of the impact he has had on them. ... He has helped make our cross-country team a place that every kid wants to be part of.”

A runner since sixth grade, Carroll decided to take his commitment to a higher level in high school. “Running is more objective than other sports. It’s just you and the clock, and that’s really it,” he said.

Carroll has played several sports, including premier club soccer. He has given back by sharing his talent and passion for sports as a coach and a referee.

In addition to athletics, Carroll said faith has been an important part of his life. He’s served as a eucharistic minister at his church for two years and an altar server for seven. “I honor God in all areas of my life,” he said. “It’s nice to take perspective and know that running and sports are a small part of life, there’s bigger things,” he said.

He’s also stayed focused on academics, taking multiple AP and Honors classes while maintaining a near-perfect GPA.

“I tried to do well in school. I don’t like not doing my best on my work,” he said.

His busy schedule has included school activities such as the National Honor Society and the YES Club.

Gig Harbor High counselor Jennifer Clarke, who’s known Carroll for eight years, said he has always stood out among his peers.

“Logan personifies leadership with integrity and grace. He is who he says he is and he will do what he says he will do in every endeavor,” she said.

Carroll plans to study business and computer science at North Carolina Chapel Hill, where he’ll be on the cross-country and track and team fields. His goal is to eventually obtain a master’s degree in engineering.
