New position proposed by Gig Harbor mayor is not justified

April 16, 2014

In the mayor’s appeal to the citizens to support a new position at City Hall, she forgot to mention one very significant fact: the new position will pay $120,000.00 per year plus benefits. That is an exorbitant amount of money for the position as described by the mayor. Is there anyone at City Hall who is paid that amount of money?

Don’t we already have people employed at City Hall whose job is to supervise the day-to-day activities of all city departments and offices?

Don’t we already have organizations, such as the Marketing Director, Chamber of Commerce and the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance to focus on economic development?

The city already pays more than $100,000.00 a year to support those positions.

The mayor does not make a compelling case that this new Director would add anything to our city government except more expenses. The proposed salary is so far out of line with any reasonable compensation that it seems unbelievable.

The $120,000.00 could be put to much better use to preserve the “jewel” that is Gig Harbor, such as improving our parks, roads, and perhaps adding a fuel dock for the boating community who might want to visit the “Maritime City.”
