World travelers find just what they need in Gig Harbor

Gig HarborFebruary 19, 2014

Now and then, you publish letters that bemoan the deterioration of Gig Harbor. My wife and I disagree.

We met and married in Lima, Peru, and later lived in Santa Barbara, Calif., San Francisco, Omaha, Neb., Miami, New York City, Washington, D.C., Madrid, Spain, Rome, Milan, Italy, Stockholm, Sweden, and Mexico City.

When we retired 14 years ago, we might have returned to any of those places, but were delighted to have chosen Gig Harbor.

The new shopping centers were done tastefully. Surely few cities this size have so many amenities. You can still see Mount Rainier, the Olympics and Puget Sound. In an hour, you can enjoy the wonders of the Olympic National Park, or the sophistication of Tacoma or Seattle.

Roaming the world, we found two constants: airports are never finished (surely true of Seatac), and locals all complain that it was so much better before.

Not for us. Gig Harbor is great and getting better!
