A true senior center should provide services at low cost

Gig HarborFebruary 12, 2014

Does anyone remember the promises that were made several years before the Boys & Girls Cub opened that we would have a senior center in Gig Harbor?

It was implied that the center would be free to seniors, just as it is in other communities. It was a shock to learn that there is not a separate facility but only a sharing of the Boys & Girls Club site, and only at certain times of each day.

Even more shocking is the fee to join the senior club, as it is called. It’s $99 for an individual and $175 for a couple.

The program Catholic Community Services provides at the site is a plus, but it’s not a good substitute for a senior center that offers a variety of activities that would benefit seniors.

In a community such as Gig Harbor, one would think there would be better provision for seniors at little or no cost.
