I read the editorial regarding community support for the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team and the front-page article regarding the need for this group to find a new place to store their equipment, which has previously been stored at the Pleasure Craft Marina. There is no information in the article about when the club was informed that they needed to find a new location by Nov. 15.
Either way, I have no problem with trying to find a home for the equipment in one of our waterfront parks. It just seems like picking the most-used park along the waterfront, and especially considering letting them build racks for storage on the pier, is ludicrous.
The article states the storage would take up one-third of the space on the pier. It would also cut off the view which currently exists.
This pier is often crowded with people enjoying various activities. To take one-third of that dock would be a shame. The pier is enjoyed by thousands of visitors and residents each year. The kayaks and canoes do not need to be stored on the dock.
I hope that Mr. Langhelm will choose the other location at Skansie that is mentioned in the article and leave the pier as it is. It will be many years before the Ancich Park will be ready to be a permanent base for the club.
