Voters in this area are facing a crucial election in the state Senate. I support Dr. Nathan Schlicher because he is bright, knowledgeable and pragmatic in his approach to Washington’s problems.
Schlicher has overseen the passage of a law to reform emergency room procedures that will reduce costs and improve patient care. It will save taxpayers $30 million a year and produce private-sector savings.
His opponent, a state co-chair of the American Legislative Exchange, has done nothing comparable.
She opposed requiring insurance companies to cover crucial diagnostic tests. She supported a law to require that all welfare recipients undergo drug testing. In other states, these laws have revealed very low levels of drug use and have cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars.
What kind of politician promotes laws that have failed elsewhere?
ALEC has a wide-ranging agenda that includes voter-suppression laws, the elimination of environmental laws and the privatizing of government services. The weakening of public schools through vouchers laws, with the goal of turning them into for-profit private schools, is an important element in its agenda.
Jan Angel downplays her ties with ALEC, which named her one of its “legislators of the year” last year, and has never discussed her support for its goals.
It is time to shut the door on obstructionism and gridlock in our politics and to reward effective leadership.
Vote for Nathan Schlicher.
