The Gig Harbor Mid-Day Rotary recognized Wolfgang Beck and Turi Abbott as Students of the Month for September and October.
Beck, September’s student of the month, is a senior at Gig Harbor High School. He is a musician and athlete with a 4.0 grade-point average. In cross country and track, he is ranked eighth in the nation.
As a musician, Beck sings in the concert choir and plays trombone in the wind symphony. He won the David Diamond Young Composers Contest when he was a freshman. His symphony — Awakening: Three Sketches of Dawn — was debuted by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra at Benaroya Hall.
Beck also tutors fellow high school students. He hopes to attend an Ivy League school and work in cancer research.
Abbott, the student of the month for October, also is a senior at Gig Harbor High School and has a 3.9 GPA. She studied abroad last year in Thailand on a Rotary exchange. There, she noticed the high volume of stray animals. Now home, she volunteers at the Humane Society.
Abbott spends her time playing violin in the orchestra, competing on the varsity debate team and serving as secretary of the Interact Club, a Rotary affiliate. She also has been a member of stage crews in the theater department.
Both students were invited to the Gig Harbor Mid-Day Rotary luncheon to receive certificates of achievement.
