High-flying slam dunks, ball-handling tricks and comedy routines will be on display Nov. 8, when the Harlem Ambassadors take on the Seagulls of Gig Harbor in a evening of basketball showmanship.
The traveling group formerly known as the Harlem Globetrotters will be at Gig Harbor High School, 5101 Rosedale St., at 7 p.m. The doors will open 40 minutes prior to the game.
The Seagulls — community members who consist of teachers, firefighters, city council members and other leaders — will play the internationally acclaimed team.
The event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor North, will be a fundraiser for children’s charities, including Backpacks 4 Kids, Communities in Schools of Peninsula and other programs.
“We came upon the opportunity by happenstance, and when we looked into it, we thought this was a great event to bring to Gig Harbor,” said Heidi Holmes of the Gig Harbor North Rotary Club. “This will be the first time the Harlem Ambassadors have come to the city.
“The ambassadors offer a great message,” Holmes said. “All the players are accomplished athletes but are also all college graduates. Their mission is to promote how it’s ‘cool to stay in school and stay off drugs.’ They combine that message into a family-friendly night of fun and we will be helping children in our area that need it the most.”
There will be an opportunity to win an autographed basketball, purchase Harlem Ambassadors souvenirs, or meet the ambassadors during a free postgame autograph session. Snacks and beverages will be available.
