Imagine your readers’ surprise upon retrieving their Oct. 9 issue of the Gateway from their mailbox or a newsstand. There, plastered prominently right over “The Peninsula Gateway” masthead on the front page was a stick-on ad for “No on Prop. 1,” the hotly contested school funding measure.
Had the Gateway taken a position against the school measure? It sure looked that way.
Those who understand the newspaper business realized it was a paid ad, but was it really necessary?
It seems the Gateway needs to draw the line between advertising and editorial in a more clear manner.
