I got together with Mary Lyssand, Peninsula High School’s culinary arts teacher, at Il Lucano Restaurant in Gig Harbor to share with the restaurant’s excellent chef, Michele Simone, a student-prepared thank-you card.
“Michele Simone volunteered his time and resources to provide an amazing demonstration for my Nutrition and Foods class,” Lyssand said. “He prepared two pasta dishes for the students and answered their questions about being a top chef. He was amazing and the students loved him. He not only donated his time but also donated the food for a bona fide Italian dinner (minus the wine) in the PHS culinary arts classroom.”
He involved the kids in the preparation of the dishes, taught them tricks and special techniques, and he enjoyed the fruits of their learning process.
“Chef Michele was incredible,” senior Jon McIntosh said. “I can’t wait to see what he can dish up at his restaurant.”
Classmate Karley Marter agreed: “I think it went really well. The food was amazing, and I learned more about cooking. Having chef Michele come to our class made me want to be a better cook.”
Freshman Shawna Hettick said Simone’s recipes were simple and healthy.
“He helped us to understand the importance of eating healthy, yet making something delicious at the same time,” Hettick said. “We couldn’t thank him enough.”
Senior Zack Werbold is confident that Simone “makes the best food ever!”
And classmate William Weron thought he knew what good pasta sauce was, “and then I tried Michele’s pasta sauce.”
To senior Jim Torres Simone was an entertaining chef with a “to-die-for recipe.”
“He served us what seemed to be a random assortment of food, but when I took a bite, I could taste a little bit of heaven in it,” Torres said.
What was egregiously wrong with this? I wasn’t made aware of the deed until after it had been done and consumed.
It’s OK; I’ll get even. I know where Il Lucano is located — 3119 Judson St. in downtown Gig Harbor.Hugh McMillan is a longtime freelance writer for The Peninsula Gateway. He can be reached at 253-884-3319 or by email at hmcmnp1000 @centurytel.net.
