Gig Harbor is peppered with misleading signs regarding the Proposition 1, the Peninsula School District’s capital levy. Your property taxes will not increase by 55 percent. The overall increase is consistent with a 10 to 12 percent increase.
If Proposition 1 is approved, the rate would be an additional $1.39 per $1,000 of assessed property value, which translates to about $35 per month for a $300,000 home. The additional cost would be limited to four years.
In the next four years, Gig Harbor will have come together and accomplished something great. We will have two new elementary schools, which will help to alleviate current overcrowding and safety issues, and it will accommodate the growth we are all seeing all around.
It is refreshing to know the increased tax dollars we would pay would go directly to a project we can see and feel in our community.
Regardless of the amount or the length of time we have to pay, no one likes to pay more taxes. But no one likes it when the value of our homes decrease. We all experienced a downturn in the housing market these past few years, but now that the market is changing, Gig Harbor has benefitted from this market rebound. One of the reasons is because of the strong public school system Peninsula has to offer.
We must continue to grow and improve our schools in order to sustain and grow our property values.
I will vote “yes” on Proposition 1.
