An event raising awareness about fall prevention will be held on Sept. 23 at Volunteer Park.
Key Pen Parks is hosting Play day to teach about fall prevention. The event is related to the Peninsula Fall Prevention Coalition.
“I’m really excited about the event,” said Jessica Smeall, Recreation Coordinator.
The event will include walking, group exercise, team building games and playground fun. It will cover how to act on different ground substrates, such as grass, pavement and concrete.
Play day started as an event for senior citizens involved in S.A.F.E. classes to teach about how to prevent falls. This is the first year it is open to everyone. Key Pen Parks is excited to open it to children and is focusing on hosting local homeschool children.
“It’s a physical education day for homeschoolers,” Smeall said.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. rain or shine. There is an indoor space if it rains. It is free and open to everyone, no RSVP necessary. Key Pen Parks is asking that participants bring a donation for the local food bank.
“I didn’t realize how inspiring it would be till we started planning,” Smeall said.
