The Gig Harbor Tides are narrowing the gap between what they can be and what they are.
If coach Sue Westering has one goal for this fall, it’s to have her team reach their potential.
“We’re 14 strong,” Westering said of her roster.
Gig Harbor finished second in the Class 4A Narrows League last season, placed seventh at the West Central District tournament and earned a state berth. The Tides lost six seniors, but they have a good outlook, Westering said.
“It’s a team filled with a little bit of new blood and returners,” she said. “A combination of both.”
Standout middle blocker Liz Fredrickson will return as a senior, as well setter Abby Miller.
“Last year, one of the main positives about it was we really had a strong bond, and as the season went along, we played for each other,” Fredrickson said.
Miller called it a sisterhood, particularly in the postseason.
“That experience we got, I don’t think we would trade it away for anything,” she said. “We’d all be willing to go through all that again to get back there.”
Outside hitter Chelsey Bennig will return along with twins Emily and Lauren Sutton, and senior Summer Adams.
Fredrickson said the Tides all learned from last year’s seniors.
“They were all really good leaders,” she said. “It was more by example, the positivity.”
Miller said the team puts an emphasis on setting goals and expectations.
“Even if we’re not reaching those goals, it gives us something to shoot for,” she said.
Namely, playing for one another.
“Just about every player on our team wants the best for each other,” Fredrickson said.
