A Pierce County man drowned Sunday evening while swimming at Lake Cushman.

The Mason County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Kyle Austin Pape, 20, of Fox Island.

Witnesses called 911 at about 4:50 p.m. after Pape dove into the lake but did not resurface, according to Mason County Sheriff’s Office spokesman William Adam.

“Swimmers in his group searched with no sighting of him,” he said.

Dive Rescue, a volunteer search and rescue group from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office and the Mason County Department of Emergency Management, responded to the scene and recovered an unconscious body at about 6:30 p.m.

Medics tried to resuscitate Pape, but he was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:55 p.m., Adam said.

An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday, and the Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case, according to Mason County Coroner Wes Stockwell.
