We moved to Gig Harbor when our first child was 3, and we had another on the way. We’d experienced first-hand the safe, close-knit community feeling and had done our research and found Gig Harbor was known for its really good school system.
Our son has been at Artondale Elementary School for two years now, and it’s been a great experience. He has had excellent teachers, awesome support and has learned a ton.
But the Artondale building itself has left us very concerned. It’s not just old and rundown, it’s also been verified by inspections to be beyond repair.
Our son is asthmatic. One of his triggers is mold. Artondale’s leaks and deteriorating structure has caused widespread mold issues. It’s a major health issue for our son, and it surely poses the same threat to many others.
But that’s not all. We also worry about the safety of all the children at Artondale. Obviously, the school tragedy in the news this past year has shown us that security in our schools needs to be a top priority.
Artondale’s current building structure is too old to put in an adequate security system to protect our children from possible outside harms. We need good, safe and secure schools to keep good families moving to Gig Harbor and staying here.
Great schools create and sustain great communities, and that benefits all of us — not just families with kids. Please vote yes on the upcoming Peninsula School District capital levy to help fund our schools and keep our kids safe.
