Peninsula High School javelin throwers Austin Kilcup and Erica Hanisch both competed Sunday in the Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships.
Kilcup finished 10th and Hanisch 13th in a field that featured some of the best athletes in the country.
Kilcup’s first throw went 151.8 feet, but he couldn’t beat it on his next two efforts and finished 10th out of the 46 competitors in the field. Kilcup needed just 8 more inches to qualify as an All-American in the boys 15-16 division.
Hanisch started with a throw of 96 feet and set a personal record at 100 feet, 6 inches on her third throw that put her into the top 15. There were 50 throwers that qualified for the girls 15-16 division.
Both qualified for the event when they finished in the top eight in the regional competition in Seattle.
