Alivia Brown, a Bellarmine Prep golfer from Gig Harbor, just missed qualifying for match play during the U.S. Girls Junior Championship on July 22-23. She shot an 81 on day two and lost an eight-way playoff in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Brown was near the top of the leaderboard for much of the tournament and finished her first round with a 2-over-par 74.
Round two was a different story, however. A bogey on 18 gave her and 81 for the day, and that dropped her into a nine-person tie for the final spot in the 64-person match-play event.
Brown stayed alive when she recorded par on the first two playoff holes, but a close shot from Florida teenager Abbey Carlson led to a tap-in birdie and allowed her to take the final spot into match play.
Brown won last year’s Class 4A state championship when she made a birdie on the final playoff hole. She also led Bellarmine to the team championship, it’s third straight in the classification.
