Peninsula High School javelin thrower's Austin Kilcup and Erica Hanisch both competed in the Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships on July 28; with Kilcup finishing tenth and Hanisch 13th in a field that featured some of the best Track & Field stars in the country.
Kilcup started the competition strong, with his first throwing going 151.8 feet, but his next two efforts were not up to par and he finished tenth out of the 46 competitors in the field. Had Kilcup added just eight inches to his throw, he would have qualified to be an All-American in the boys 15/16 division.
Hanisch started the competition off with a throw of 96 feet, then went 95 feet with her second throw before setting a personal record with a throw of 100.5 feet that jumped her into the top fifteen, finishing 13th overall out of the 50 throwers in the 15/16 year old girls division.
Both throwers qualified by finishing in the top eight of the regional competition in Seattle, with Kilcup winning his division against the best throwers from the Pacific Northwest.
