Local business network group hopes to give run a deeper meaning

Gig Harbor chiropractor Dr. Tim Holmes and a local business network will stage a New Year’s Day 5-kilometer run and half marathon to raise funds for the children and families of the fallen Lakewood police officers.

Holmes, who has organized Gig Harbor’s Turkey Trot for the past six years, thought this would be a good way to give back to the community.

“It was such a tragedy,” Holmes said of the Nov. 29 shootings at a coffee shop in Parkland. “We want to thank the officers for what they’ve done.”

Business Network International — Puget Sound Business Partners and Holmes Chiropractic, which includes 11 businesses in the Gig Harbor area, have been handing out fliers to spread the word about the event.

The run will begin at 9 a.m. at Skansie Brothers Park at the intersection of Rosedale Street and Harborview Drive in downtown Gig Harbor and continue along the waterfront toward Donkey Creek Park.

Promoters hope to raise $2,000. The cost is $20 to participate and an additional $10 to purchase a T-shirt on the day of the event.

Holmes said he doesn’t expect a large turnout since it’s a first-time event. Then again, the Turkey Trot began with a handful of people and drew nearly 2,000 participants last month.

Deanna Shaw, whose husband is a Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy, became interested in the idea of having a run to honor the fallen officers. Shaw, who owns Harbor Home Massage, said it’s important to keep the memories of the officers alive.

The group hopes it can turn the event into an annual run.

“People are doing something in the harbor,” Shaw said. “We haven’t forgotten.”

The 5K/half marathon has been an informal tradition on New Year’s Day for the past four years. But in light of the shootings, Holmes and others said they want to promote a charity at the same time.
