Gig Harbor senior distance runner Conner Peloquin qualified for the 31st annual Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships by placing sixth in the West Regional qualifier last Saturday with a time of 15 minutes, 38 seconds at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.
Peloquin was exactly one second behind friendly competitor and Central Kitsap High School cross country and track 4A state champion Shane Moskowitz who placed fifth (15:39).
Peloquin said the depth of field was awesome.
“It was the highest amount of competition I’ve ever run,” Peloquin said.
By placing sixth, Peloquin will be considered one of the top 40 distance runners in the nation. There were four separate regions and each one is sending its top 10 finishers.
Peloquin said he feels like he’s been under the radar. This will be his time to shine.
“I really want to go to this meet to prove that I belong up there,” Peloquin said. “It shows I belong in that top (national) group.”
The 5k national cross country race will take place this Saturday at Morley Field, Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif.
