Area newspaper boxes stolen, then discarded

Thieves exert lots of energy to steal a few coins

Gateway staff report

Published: 01:10PM November 11th, 2009

Gig Harbor police contacted a man last Friday after he called 9-1-1 to report several newspaper single-copy boxes had been dumped at the old Spadoni sand pit.

Police said several Peninsula Gateway, Tacoma News Tribune and Seattle Times paper boxes had been left in the 5000 block of 96th Street NW. The man who found the boxes in the brush had been off-roading in a four-wheeler.

The boxes are believed to have been stolen from area businesses recently. Police said the boxes contained newspapers dated between Oct. 12 and Oct. 16.

The coin-operated boxes appeared to have been crudely removed by force, police said. The 10 paper dispensers were dumped along the northwest corner of the unused property.
