The Peninsula Seahawks played hard, but they needed more than effort against the perennial powerhouse Bonney Lake Panthers.
Peninsula was shut out by Bonney Lake 3-0 last Thursday at Roy Anderson Field in a South Puget Sound League 3A contest.
Bonney Lake (10-1-1 overall, 4-0-0 Class 3A South Puget Sound League) is the No. 1 team in the division. Peninsula (4-5-1, 2-1-0) was looking to pull off an upset before it heads into the heart of its league schedule.
The Seahawks held strong for good portion of the first half against the Panthers, who feature just three seniors. But a miscue on defense sparked a breakaway for Bonney Lake junior Hillary Colbert, who scored in the 25th minute.
Peninsula had trouble keeping up with the Panthers’ tempo and speedy wingmen throughout. The Seahawks took four shots on goal before halftime but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Bonney Lake, which converted two of their five shots on goal in the first half, scored again when Savanna Moorehouse penetrated the net in the 33rd minute.
Peninsula head coach Jeremie Lynden said he was happy with the Seahawks’ intensity, but they had trouble adjusting.
“Every team is a different way of playing,” Lynden said. “And the girls need to figure that out.”
Bonney Lake leads the SPSL in scoring with 60 goals. Leading by two scores, the Panthers closed the door on a Peninsula rally when Moorehouse tallied her second goal of the night on a 17-yard shot in the 71st minute.
“Bonney Lake did a superb job of using their speed,” Lynden said. “We came out playing hard but not smart, and you have to play 50-50 against teams like this.”
The Seahawks faced Auburn Mountainview (9-2-1, 3-1-1) on Tuesday after press time. Peninsula will host Sumner (6-3-3, 2-1-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday.
