PORT ORCHARD The Gig Harbor Tides girls soccer team played to a scoreless tie in a Class 4A Narrows League match against the undefeated South Kitsap Wolves last Thursday at South Kitsap High School.
Gig Harbor’s aggressive style of play kept it within striking distance, but the speedy Tides (4-2-3 overall, 3-1-2 Narrows League) were unable to convert on several scoring opportunities.
The Wolves (7-0-2, 5-0-2) also had a number of runs, but Tides senior goalkeeper Britt Werner had other ideas.
“I just didn’t want to let my team down,” Werner said. “I knew I had to get the job done. I did it for my team.”
Although Gig Harbor went scoreless throughout the rivalry contest, they matched South Kitsap’s intensity.
Gig Harbor head coach Dani States said her team played tough.
“I thought it was pretty 50-50 for opportunities,” States said. “Yeah, it would’ve been great to pull out the victory, but overall, they adjusted well from what they needed to (during) the first half.”
Gig Harbor is tied with Central Kitsap (3-1-3 league) and Stadium (3-1-2) for third place in the Narrows League.
States said that, even with the tie, the Tides are improving game by game.
“Things are getting closer where we couldn’t win balls,” States said. “We have to take advantage of the opportunity when we have them, because they’re maybe not going to come very often.”
Werner said the team’s rhythm is improving and that, as long as they keep working together, they have the potential to be a solid team.
Earlier in the week, Gig Harbor beat Wilson 1-0. The Tides were scheduled to visit Shelton (4-5-2, 2-2-2) after press time on Tuesday, followed by a road match against Stadium on Thursday.
