It's always nice to see a retired person switch gears and not follow the norm of “being retired.” George Hoover, the subject of our lead story on page 1A this week, had a dream of flying. Children and adults alike have dreamed — at one time or another — of being a firefighter or an astronaut.
Hoover had a major setback and put his flying career on hold for 31 years when his 26-year-old flight instructor died in a crash. But he eventually made his dream come true by throwing away conventional “retirement” wisdom.
Hoover has a passion for aviation and for what he sees in the act of flying. Instead of sitting back, wondering what might have been, he started flying lessons again and achieved his instructor rating. After he bought his own plane, Hoover is relaunching his life and a new career by instructing and sharing his passion for the skies.
Hoover is an outdoorsman, a father and grandfather. He was even involved in motorcycle racing. It’s a combination of a love for the outdoors and motor vehicles that “bush flying” is about.
Flying is one of those passions that can suck you in. The rewards are great. Hoover wants to share this great sport in hopes that he can motivate a youngster or a seasoned pilot looking to rekindle their passion of flight.
