Bill Trandum is seeking election for the Key Peninsula Parks board of commissioners. Trandum was appointed to the commission after Ross Bischoff died in October 2008.
During his short time on the board, Trandum has worked to acquire more than 400 acres of new land for the department. He also has worked extensively on the park’s master plan.
Trandum said his main job is to put community input into action while keeping it in the perspective of a fiscally mindful department.
“If all I accomplish is that our management is fiscally responsible, it would be worth putting in the effort,” Trandum said.
Trandum said he’d like to see parks become more involved in what the community wants. He points to the current construction of a Frisbee golf course at Volunteer Park as a testament to the commission listening to the public’s requests.
If elected, he said he’d like to look into opening an off-leash dog park and “anything else the public may want.”
Trandum also is part of the department’s land and services committee.
The department should focus on acquiring more land, increasing park security and maintaining parks to attract more programs, he said.
Trandum said the biggest challenge facing Key Pen Parks is accurately predicting revenue streams during a time when property and zoo taxes are low. Projects undertaken by the department should reflect only what the district can afford, he said.
“I don’t want the taxpayers to have to bail us out,” Trandum said.
That includes finding volunteer groups to fill park activities.
Bill and his wife Georganne have been married for 44 years and have four children and eight grandchildren.
One of the reason’s Trandum has such an affinity for the parks is family. He said both his children and grandchildren have used Key Pen parks, and he wants to make sure parks remain safe for his family and others.
The Trandums have lived in Vaughn full-time since 2001. They previously lived in Browns Point.
Trandum currently is a financial adviser for the Royal Bank of Canada and his office is in Gig Harbor. He also has a media background, working for multiple newspapers in the McClatchy Company and volunteering for the Key Peninsula News.
