Out Our Way: Krazy Key Parade and Family Summer Fun Day set to debut

Out Our Way

Published: 02:42PM July 22nd, 2009

The Krazy Key Parade and Family Summer Fun Day will make its debut on Aug. 8.

Like Vaughn Pioneer Days of the past, there will be a parade from the Key Center fire station to Olson Road, then to the Key Peninsula Civic Center in Vaughn, beginning at 10 a.m.

Parade participants will line up in order on the hill behind the fire station at 9:30 a.m.

Olson Road will be closed during parade time, and the bridge at the head of Vaughn Bay is scheduled to be closed for replacement, so plan ahead.

The Key Peninsula Fair Board voted last February to not hold a Key Peninsula Community Fair this year, but to revamp and rethink options.

Some board members and community folks wanted some kind of family fun substitute for the fair, and a committee of interested people gathered to discuss it. An “Unfair” was discussed, but it was figured to be an inappropriate title for an event they wanted people to attend and enjoy.

Key Peninsula Fire Department’s American LaFrance 1919 fire engine will lead the parade. It was the original fire truck used until newer ones came along. Division Chief Chuck West had it repainted, so it’s bright and shiny again.

Already signed up for the parade are equestrians, horse-drawn wagons, the Peninsula High School marching band — out of uniform, for this occasion — a clown, old-time cars and a various collection of others.

Families and organizations are encouraged to put together a float — a car or truck, boat, trailer or other vehicle — decorated with a Krazy fun theme. The float winner will receive dinners at a local restaurant.

Dress up a favorite dog, horse, goat, llama, etc. — be sure they are collared and leashed — or form a group to walk, or some other mode of travel.

Think Krazy fun and be creative, the committee urges.

Live entertainment, food, games, farmers market and a beer garden will all take place at the KPCC from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Entertainment will start with the Rhythm Intermission drummers right after the parade and include country musician Randy Viers, DJ Kip, Rhythm ‘n’ Shoes Cloggers, Key Singers, a petting zoo and clowns.

Horse handler Chuck Kraft will stage a demonstration at 1 p.m. with a volunteer horse to show the games horses play with each other for respect and leadership.

A fish pond, penny/candy scramble and a three-legged race all are planned for kids to enjoy.

Available food from vendors includes hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, sodas and ice cream.

The farmers market will have both food and craft items for sale.

Applications for both parade and vendors will be needed, and the deadline is July 31. Parade applications can be obtained from the fire station, Sunnycrest Nursery & Floral, KPCC or online at www.kpciviccenter.org.

Vendor and market applications are available at KPCC or at the Web site.

The organizing committee for this first-of-its-kind event on the Key Peninsula includes Tom Boardman, Sharon Hicks, PJ Kezele, Claudia Loy and West.

Lavender and Old Stuff at Lavender Park — on the same day at Lavender Park on Cramer Road at Key Center, will host a dozen antique dealers and offer various lavender products from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Owner Rita O’Dell said the dealers will sell antiques, vintage jewelry, small furniture and collectibles. Lavender Park also will sell vintage-style benches for yards, as well as lavender bouquets, sachets, dried everlastings, wreaths and soap.

Look for signs at Key Center or drive down Cramer to the entrance sign at the first driveway on the left.
