Home building and design has a new latitude

Team of contractors make dream homes more of a reality

The general contractors at Latitude 123 in the Finholm district of Gig Harbor want building, remodeling or decorating a home to be as easy as 1-2-3.

Charles Bucher, an architect with Harbor Home Design, Inc., Deann Nordi of Broadway Interior Design and Judy Lynott of New Trends Renovations & Design all operate under the umbrella of 123 to lend their areas of expertise to the building and design process.

Bucher, who has 22 years of design and construction experience, said there is a trend for contractors to team up to make the home-building process run more smoothly.

“It’s not new anymore,” he said. “It’s catching on. We joined together to support each other from basic design to turn-key.”

Bucher said the trio are all licensed, bonded general contractors.

“With the three of us, if there’s a problem, we can catch it and fix it before it becomes an issue,” he said.

“It’s more cost-efficient for us to work together,” Nordi added. “Most designers and architects are hourly, so it’s more efficient to work under one roof.”

The group leads clients through the process from the ground up, dealing with everything from septic tank issues and site inspection to the potential confusing and time-consuming permitting process.

They work throughout Pierce and King counties, and they deal with the unique topography of the area, which includes parcels where heavy rainfall and ground water obstacles can arise.

“All of the good waterfront property has been bought up,” Bucher said. “So when someone does purchase some, it is going to have drainage issues.”

The group can take on remodeling projects in phases, allowing homeowners who want to move forward to take on a project in steps. That allows homeowners to take a financial breather in-between, instead of having to wait and ride out the recession.

“I just finished a waterfront (home) remodel on Fox Island, and they chose to do it in three phases,” Lynott said. “Because of the economy, people can’t afford to do a whole project at once. Now they don’t have to.”

The trio tackles everything from new homes, to light commercial buildings, to small remodels.

“We’re not just building waterfront homes,” Lynott said. “No job is too small.”

Nordi adds her special touch to homes that need a facelift by opening up spaces and adding light and color. She can provide complete furnishings and carries high-end lines like Thomasville, Henredon, Burton James and Hunter Douglas.

“I can fully furnish these lines because I have a direct connection, eliminating the middle man,” she said. “My design skills combine color and space continuity within a client’s budget.

“You don’t have to have Louie XIII chairs to make a place look great,” she added. “You can do small things to totally change the look of a home without a whole lot of money.”

Nordi said most homeowners in the Pacific Northwest want to open up their living spaces for more light, adding skylights, expanding ceilings and replacing walls with floor-to-ceiling windows.

“People don’t want to live in dark little cabins,” she said. “They want to open up and bring nature in. I love to bring in light and integrate the interior with the exterior.

“With the economy the way it is, people want their homes to be their own little oasis.”
