Sharon’s Consignment is up for sale

Anyone wanting to own a small business that they can take care of without a lot of overhead might find a good deal in Gig Harbor.

Sharon Kresse plans to sell her consignment clothing store, “Sharon’s Consignment,” on Pioneer Avenue in the heart of Gig Harbor. Kresse has owned and run the business since 1997 and is selling it to focus on her other business, Sharon’s Spa Services, on Soundview Drive.

“The thing I’m going to miss the most is the people,” Kresse said. “A lot of my customers have ended up being good friends. When people come here, they are pleased with what they see. A lot of people don’t know about consignments, and they don’t know that there’s somewhere they can buy such high-quality clothes at an affordable price.”

Consignment stores sell used merchandise at a discount price and pay a percentage of the sale to the merchandise’s owner. Sharon’s sells clothing for particular occasions, such as parties, proms and weddings.

“Lately, a lot of people have been going on Christmas cruises and are looking for clothing just for that,” Kresse said. “They are looking for things for special occasions, like the Zoobilee at Point Defiance (Zoo) or the Canterwood auctions.

“People can buy things that have only been worn once,” she added. “We have everything from casual to formal, in sizes from 0 to 3x. We have everything you need here.”

A customer could build an outfit from the merchandise for a fraction of the retail price at Sharon’s — the store has shoes, hats, jewelry, scarves, jackets and purses.

Kresse is picky about what she sells. She only takes in high-quality items — they can’t be dirty or have buttons missing or be out of style, she said.

“People say they see things here that they’ve seen in leading department stores,” she said. “Designer items you might see at Nordstrom’s, Macy’s or The Gap.”

The store is deceivingly large inside. From the parking lot, the craftsman-style house looks tiny, but as one wanders through the front room, it opens up into a hallway, two other rooms and a kitchen — all filled with interesting things to browse.

The house also has an upstairs, which Kresse uses for storage, but she said a new owner could use that space for anything they choose.

“It depends on how they want to run it,” she said. “They can use the upstairs for furniture, children’s clothes or wedding items. I’m here Tuesday through Saturday, but they can change that, too, if they want to make more money.”

The business is for sale, “lock, stock and barrel,” she said. The price of $39,500 includes the merchandise, fixtures and a customer consignment list. The land is leased on a one-year basis.

“You won’t find a better landlord in the harbor,” Kresse said. “He is absolutely the best. He’s been in the harbor a long time.”

Kresse said the business does well because there is a need for it in the harbor.

“People need this and want this here,” she said. “It’s a good source for people. I will miss this place, and I’m still enjoying it. I’ll sell it as soon as I can, but I’ll stay here until it sells.”
