Gig Harbor’s Ricks completes U.S. Navy basic training

Navy Seaman Recruit Stephen J. Ricks, a son of Teresa G. and Peter J. Ricks of Gig Harbor, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Ricks, a 2008 Gig Harbor High School graduate, completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, fire fighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.

An emphasis also was placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations,” an exercise that gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.

“Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.

Ricks is a 2008 graduate of Gig Harbor High School.

Albers graduates from basic military training

Air Force Airman Jordan M. Albers has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Albers, a son of Randy and Margie Albers of Gig Harbor, graduated from Gig Harbor High School in 2006.

During the six weeks of training, Albers studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree relating through the Community College of the Air Force.

Zinkan graduates from basic combat training

Army Pvt. Kiersten E. Zinkan has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

Zinkan is a daughter of Kathy Seelye of Gig Harbor and a 2007 graduate of Pierce College in Steilacoom.

During the nine weeks of training, Zinkan studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and she received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.
