Find great things to do in town this spring

special to the Gateway

Published: 03:35PM March 5th, 2008

As I write this column, the sun is shining and the sky is blue. I don’t have access to a thermometer, but I am sure it is closing in on 60 degrees.

There’s nothing like that feeling that we have turned the corner into spring.

This year, we begin an earlier daylight saving time (March 9), which always brings out local optimism and “spring fever.” So, since I am feeling optimistic and have a bad case of spring fever, I thought I would share some ideas for curing this common March ailment.

Gig Harbor is an excellent place to enjoy in March, when you are typically thinking about spring gardening and enjoying the newness of spring.

Being outside in March, (even if there is some rain) feels so good. The smell of the dirt, the blossoms and the beach seems more acute and dances about your senses.

Suddenly, there are birds having their own spring fever. It’s a great month to watch and listen to the bird courtship.

Other sounds of the season include lawn mowers, kids reacquainting with “outside,” and even a brave soul or two who take to water skis and wakeboards.

I’ve put together a list of some local businesses who will welcome you and your spring fever with fun and fresh ways to make March colorful and enjoyable.

Here are some ideas:

A Color is in at local nurseries and garden centers, including Peninsula Gardens and Rosedale Gardens, as well as Sunnycrest on the Key Peninsula.

A Local downtown shops like Ace Hardware, Harbor Peddler, Harbor Mercantile, The Keeping Room, She Sells Sea Shells and many more are stocked with fun spring decorating and gardening ideas.

A Wildbirds Unlimited will get you off to a good start with supplies and ideas for spring bird watching.

You might want to try these suggestions to enjoy the spring-like weather:

A A brand new Harbor History Walk brochure is due to us this week, so look for it at all the local information kiosks. Get out and walk Harborview and learn about local history.

A The annual Health and Safety Expo takes place at the Bujacich Fire Station on March 15. Join your neighbors for this fun and educational event.

A Spring Fling is happening on the Key Peninsula on March 15. Learn more at www.twowaters.org.

A Don’t miss the annual Gig Harbor Easter Egg Hunt, this year at Stroh’s Field, at noon on March 22. This event is free. Find out more by calling 253-858-3400.

And coming soon: Gig Harbor Parks Appreciation Day is April 19. Want to volunteer in one of our local parks? Call the City of Gig Harbor at 253-851-6170.
