Kyle Stanley may not have been in contention for the major golf championship that American Lucas Glover won on Monday, but the Gig Harbor native put the finishing touches on his first full U.S. Open Championship.

Stanley, one of three amateurs to make the cut over the weekend during the 109th U.S. Open at Bethpage Black, shot a final-round 75 and finished 53rd with a 13-over-par 293. He birdied Nos. 13 and 16 in his final round but was plagued by five bogeys and a double bogey.

Glover shot 4-under 276 to win the tournament by two shots. Phil Mickelson, whose wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer last month, tied for second with David Duval and Ricky Barnes.

It was Stanley’s second trip to the U.S. Open. He qualified for last year’s tournament at Torrey Pines but missed the cut by a single stroke.

That didn’t happen last week.

Stanley had an impressive round of even-par 70 on Friday after rain washed out most of Thursday’s first-round play. He kept his mistakes to a minimum, making 13 pars and negating a bogey and a double bogey with three birdies. His first round was four shots better than Tiger Woods’ 74 and one shot behind Phil Mickelson’s 69.

Stanley made the cut on Saturday despite shooting 74. He was right at the cut mark of 4-over 144.

During third-round play on Sunday, Stanley birdied No. 16 after a double bogey on No. 12 to finish 1 over through his first nine holes, but bogeys on three of his first six following the turn led to another 74.

Two other amateurs finished the tournament Monday, including Nick Taylor, a Canadian who plays golf at the University of Washington. Taylor shot a 5-under 65 during the second round but finished 13 over par in his other three rounds to wind up tied for 36th at 8-over 288.

The third amateur was Drew Weaver, who finished tied for 40th at 9-over 289 following an opening-round 69.

Puyallup’s Ryan Moore, who shot a 69 during Saturday’s second round, finished in a tie for 10th at 2-over 282.

Stanley, who is expected to turn pro later this summer, recently finished his junior year at Clemson as the runner-up in the NCAA national championship tournament for the second time in three years. He was ranked fifth in the May 31 edition of Golfweek; Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech, who missed the cut at the U.S. Open, was ranked third, and Taylor was ranked eighth.

Stanley was a standout performer during his high school years at Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma, and he has four career holes in one — two at Canterwood Golf & Country Club in Gig Harbor.
