The Gig Harbor Tides girls soccer team scored four goals in less than 10 minutes to beat the Lincoln Abes 8-0 last week.

The Tides (3-3-2 overall, 2-2-1 Class 4A league) are one of several Narrows League teams with one loss, and they’re all chasing South Kitsap (6-0-1, 4-0-1 league), which shut out Bellarmine last week.

Gig Harbor showed no mercy early on against Lincoln as junior midfielder Mishayla Bertelsen scored a hat trick in the first half. She opened the match with a goal that parried off Lincoln keeper Anica Bashay.

Tides sophomore Katie Brooks, who scored her third goal of the season, said it’s important to work hard in those types of matches.

“So when they get to those teams who are going to be challenging, we are still on our game,” Brooks said.

Gig Harbor worked on communication and making runs without the ball against Lincoln, she added.

The Abes’ front line took just one shot on goal.

Gig Harbor senior Morgan Sullivan scored the team’s final first-half goal, giving her team a 5-0 lead.

“These games we want to win, but we’re mostly focusing on the things we need to work on more,” Sullivan said.

The highlight came when Gig Harbor senior Hannah Massee dribbled down the far side of the field and kicked it right in front of the keeper for a Josie Graybeal goal on a header.

The Tides’ second string was dispatched for parts of both halves.

Gig Harbor head coach Dani States said it was a chance to implement things they might not risk in other scenarios.

“It also gives me an opportunity to play people in different positions, different combinations,” States said. “That way, if I need them there, it builds confidence. That’s what you utilize in these types of situations.”

Gig Harbor was scheduled to play Wilson after press time on Tuesday. The Tides travel to Port Orchard to play the undefeated Wolves at 7 p.m. Thursday at South Kitsap High School.
