Peninsula senior swimmer Lindsey Marchand sliced through the water to grab two Automatic All-America times at the Class 3A West Central District III meet last weekend at Hazen High School in Renton.
Marchand won both the 100-yard butterfly and the 100 breaststroke, and she helped the Seahawks score 159 points and grab a third-place finish behind district champion Kennedy (324) and Mount Rainier (118).
Marchand’s performance in the 100 fly (54.82 seconds) and the breast (1:04.93) put her in the top 40 in the country in both events.
The Seahawks began the district meet by placing second in the 200 medley relay and breaking the school record in 1:54.42 with sophomore Kellie Blauvelt, junior Alix Frank, Marchand and freshman Casey Penrose.
Penrose notched a second-place finish in the 200 IM when she touched the wall in 2:16.05.
At the state meet this weekend, Marchand will compete in the 100 fly and 100 breast, Blauvelt will swim the 100 breast and 200 individual medley, Penrose will take on the 200 IM and 500 free, and Peninsula seniors Dana Davidson and Kelsie Williams both will be in the 1-meter diving event.
Davidson placed third at the district diving competition with a score of 209.25 points. Williams scored 196.60.
The Seahawks finished the district meet by placing third in the 400 free relay behind senior Amanda Brunswick, Blauvelt, Marchand and Penrose.
The No. 1 seed in the Class 4A South Puget Sound League was nearly upset by the Gig Harbor girls soccer team last weekend in a West Central District III match.
But the Kentwood Conquerors eliminated the Tides’ chances of advancing to the 4A state soccer tournament with a second-half goal that proved to be the game-winner.
After a loss to Bethel in a double-elimination West Central District III volleyball match, the Gig Harbor Tides stayed alive by beating Kentridge.
Gig Harbor will continue in district play when it faces Narrows League champion Olympia on Saturday at the Kitsap Pavilion.
If the Tides win two straight, they’ll advance to the state tournament. But if they lose, their season will come to an end.
