Nick Fandel shows how to follow through as he tees off at a recent home match against Olympic. Peninsula won the Olympic League Championship. Fandel shot a 74 at sub-district held at McCormick Woods to qualify for state.

Three Peninsula Seahawks golfers qualified for the Class 3A state tournament on Monday during the sub-district tournament at McCormic Woods in Port Orchard.

Nick Fandel, Christian Letts and Chad Findlay earned the distinction, and Fandel was the sub-district medalist with a 74.

District qualifiers were Kevin Keiter (77) and Joey McNelis (79). Surprisingly, Olympic League MVP Chris Bean didn’t qualify for district or state.

Anna Heacox and Katie Stavig were district qualifiers for the Peninsula girls.

Last week, the Peninsula boys golf team won the Olympic League 3A Division by dominating the Olympic Trojans 160-111 at Canterwood Golf & Country Club.

It was the highest score the Peninsula boys have had at Canterwood in eight years.

The boys finished undefeated at 8-0 overall, 7-0 in league.

Bean was named the league MVP with a scoring average of even par. Other first team all-league honorees for Peninsula were Keiter, Findlay and McNelis. They finished first, second, third, sixth and eighth, respectively, in the eight-team league.

The Seahawks girls lost to Olym pic, 71-50. Peninsula finished third in the Olympic League (6-4 overall, 5-2 league).

“The girls are a very young team with great potential for the future next fall in our new league (South Puget Sound League 3A Division),” Peninsula coach Larry Gilhuly said.

More recently, the Peninsula boys earned the honor of playing in one of the best high school golf championships at Skagit Golf & Country Club in the 28th Annual Egbers Invitational, finishing third.

Only league champions and the best players from across the state compete in a team format, with 14 teams playing in the first round and the four best scores counting.

At the end of round one, Peninsula sat in third place with a total of 298, one shot behind Kamiak, the defending 4A state champion, and Snohomish, the 4A leaders this year.

The format of the tournament allowed the top 40 players to play a second round to determine the team championship.

Only five of the 14 schools had three players playing well enough to play in the afternoon.

Defending state 1A champion Charles Wright Academy, Lynden and Kamiak had three players. Snohomish had all five, while Peninsula had four.

After the second round, Peninsula finished in third behind the two 4A powers — Snohomish and Kamiak — but well ahead of the other two teams.

McNelis finished with a two-day total of 148 (75-73) to finish in a 12th-place tie, and Bean (72-77) shot 149 to help the Seahawks earn their best finish at the tournament.

Findlay shot 74-79 to finish tied for 25th at 153, while Kevin Keiter tied for 35th (77-81—158) and Nick Fandel added a first-round 81.

The Gig Harbor Tides swept the Peninsula Seahawks 12-4 in a non-league, crosstown rivalry game on April 29.

The Tides’ improved to 16-2 overall after defeating the Foss Falcons 18-7 on Thursday.

The Tides jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Peninsula after the first quarter, but the lead was cut as the Seahawks took advantage of a few errors that resulted in Tides’ players in the penalty box.

With the halftime score 4-3, the Tides turned up the intensity.

“As in previous similar situations, the Tides came out in the third quarter and really upped their game,” Tides coach Mike Kelly said.

Sophomore Lauren Lott allowed just one goal the entire second half and blocked a total of 13 shots.

With a deeper bench, the Tides piled on the scores, going on a 5-1 rally. They added three more goals to seal the victory.

Gig Harbor sophomore Lauren Biggs and junior Aundi Ragan led the team with four goals each. Ragan added five steals and and Lott had four.
