The Henderson Bay Fireworks Committee will dish up a homegrown fireworks show at the head of Henderson Bay on Saturday near the mouth of the Purdy Spit. The program is scheduled to begin at 10:10 p.m. and expected to last about 20 minutes.

Last July, organizers brought a barge to launch rockets farther into the bay than in previous years, allowing more people along the beach a chance to view the display. It will be visible for onlookers centered on the Purdy Spit and from shore locations on both sides of the bay well to the south.

“Last year, we brought it further out so other people could see it,” said Dalen Harrison, whose husband, Richard Gillette, heads up the fireworks committee. “The barge is 50 by 30 feet, and we’ll hook it to the same anchors as last year so it will be in the same place. We have about 720 shells and several large 8-inch shells.”

Music choreographed with the display will play out over a large sound system on a raft out in the bay. Those not within earshot can enjoy the music on KGHP, 89.3 FM, 89.9 FM or 93.7 FM. It also can be heard online at www.KGHP.org.

Harrison won’t give up a spoiler and reveal what tunes will be played.

“The music will be a surprise,” she said.

The fireworks committee is a non-profit organization funded by donations. Those who wish to contribute may do so by mailing a check to: The Henderson Bay Fireworks Committee, 4 Marble Beach Road NW, Gig Harbor, WA 98332.
