The Cheney Family Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound is expected to open in September, but this summer, the club will give local children a preview of what’s to come.

The club will offer a summer day camp at Discovery Elementary School in Gig Harbor that will have the same kinds of arts and crafts, education and sporting activities that take place at a regular facility.

The camp will run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays for four weeks from July 6-31. Each week will have a particular theme, like “creepy crawly week, superheroes week, H20 so cool and space and science week. Parents can sign their children up for single weeks or up to all four weeks.

Glenna Nelson, program specialist for arts and crafts, said the club has a variety of activities planned, such as making tie-dyed butterflies and a curtain for the talent show during superhero week.

“Superheroes week will be a really cool week,” she said. “We’ll have a soldier from Iraq and officers from the police and fire departments — real-life heroes that the kids can look up to. Each kid has a different view of what a superhero is.”

The children will be asked to make a list of what qualities a superhero possesses, in order to help them find those qualities in themselves. It also helps connect the children to each other, Nelson said.

Children who attend the camp will learn about healthy eating habits and other ways to stay fit. There will be plenty of outdoor activities, including field trips to the harbor to study sea life, a trip to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma and to the Pacific Science Center in Seattle.

Kory Eggenberger, a sports, fitness and recreation program specialist, said the program will include a lot of outdoor and gym games.

“We’ll have themes like Superman tag, water balloon activities and a superhero challenge,” he said. “We’ll have a fitness test geared toward superhero-type things. The kids are going to definitely be keeping busy and staying active.”

Ryann Bell, a 6-year-old student at Discovery Elementary, has signed up for two of the summer courses.

“I really want to make a real kite and maybe some snowflakes,” she said. “It’s going to be awesome.”
