Donation goal met for fading flags

of the Gateway

Published: 04:41PM July 1st, 2009

There are no more old and faded U.S. flags in Gig Harbor.

Since putting out a call for donations last week, the City of Gig Harbor received donations to the tune of 66 new U.S. flags — with more on the way.

In recent weeks, the city had received numerous complaints from residents about the condition of old flags around the city.

Nearly $900 has been donated from local community members and businesses. Water to Wine owner Steve Lynn, who also is the president of the Gig Harbor Historic Waterfront Association, donated $150.

Another GHHWA member, city council member Paul Kadzik, donated $100.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints also plans to donate 20 flags.

In all, about 23 donations had been made as of June 29 — 10 of which were anonymous.

City crews installed a majority of the new flags on Monday.

All surplus flags will be reserves in case new flags are lost or destroyed.

Mayor Chuck Hunter plans to read the names of all donors during the July 7 Summer Sounds at Skansie concert, which will feature the 133rd Army National Guard Band.
