Ant hill fire

June 20 — Firefighters were called to the scene of an ant hill fire. They arrived to find a small 1-foot by 1-foot burned area. The reporting party told firefighters he had seen smoke in the area and called 9-1-1, then went to investigate and found the ant hill on fire. He extinguished the fire with his garden hose. After making sure the fire was out, the firefighters returned to service.

Apartment fire

June 21 — Firefighters responded mutual aid to an apartment fire in University Place. Responding crews assisted in finding hot spots on the second floor after the fire was brought under control. In addition, the firefighters assisted in returning equipment to the fire engines that had deployed fire fighting equipment.

Car accident

June 22 — Paramedics evaluated a 17-year-old girl who said she had been traveling at the speed limit when she glanced into her rear-view mirror, just when the car in front of her had to stop at a red light. She told medics that, other than some pain where her seat belt held her in place, she was fine. The girl was left in the care of her mother at the scene.

Uncontrolled nosebleed

June 23 — An 85-year-old woman called 9-1-1 when she couldn’t control a half-hour-long nosebleed. She told paramedics that her nose started bleeding when she sneezed. Paramedics provided supportive care and assistance with the bleeding while en route to an area hospital.

Woman falls

June 24 — A 73-year-old woman was unable to get up following an early morning fall. The woman’s husband found her down when he returned home later that afternoon and called 9-1-1. Paramedics immobilized the woman’s leg and provided supportive care during transport to an area hospital.

Water problem

June 25 — A toilet hose broke on a second-floor bathroom of an area residence. The home’s occupants were away during the event. A neighbor notified the homeowner, who called 9-1-1 for assistance. Firefighters advised the homeowner to call a carpet-cleaning expert to help with repairs. Crews began to evacuate water while the cleaning company was en route.

Boy falls

June 26 — A 17-year-old boy fell about 20 feet from a rope swing. The boy’s injuries were sufficient enough to call 9-1-1. Emergency medical technicians found the boy with multiple injuries and requested a medic unit to respond, treat and transport him to an area hospital. The crew assisted with patient care after they arrived at an area emergency room.

Stroke symptoms

June 22 — A 102-year-old Lakebay man was treated and transported to a local hospital for symptoms of a stroke. The man proved to be a living history lesson for crews, as his family recounted his friendship with the Wright Brothers and his early days of aviation.

Poisoning

June 23 — A 17-year-old boy was overcome with carbon monoxide as he and others sat around a campfire at a Longbranch youth camp. The campfire was in a covered area with a metal fire pit and a vented hood that was designed for such activities. The boy was treated and transported to a local hospital.

Grass fire

June 24 — A grass fire was started in a field by someone who was burning a stump. There was no damage to structures or injuries sustained due to the fire. Crews at the scene got the fire under control within 15 minutes.

Car departs roadway

June 25 — A woman in her mid-30s fell asleep at the wheel of her vehicle in the Lake Minterwood area. The woman drove her car into a ditch and a tree. No injuries were reported. The woman was wearing her seat belt, and the car’s air bags deployed.

Motorcycle spill

June 26 — A 22-year-old Longbranch man sustained injuries after his motorcycle began to wobble, causing him to lose control and crash into a ditch in the Longbranch area. The man was airlifted by helicopter to a Tacoma hospital for evaluation and treatment of his injuries.

Seizure

June 28 — A woman in her 20s suffered a seizure while she was enjoying the day at Penrose Point State Park. Fire department personnel were having their annual picnic at the same location, which made for a speedy response. Paramedics and firefighters tended to the woman, who declined transportation to an area hospital.
