Livable Fair, plant sale, history coming to KPCC Saturday

special to the Gateway

Published: 03:48PM May 7th, 2008

Three major annual events — the Livable Community Fair, Lakebay Fuschsia Society Plant Sale and Heritage Month at the Key Peninsula Historical Society Museum — are coming May 10 at the Key Peninsula Civic Center in Vaughn.

Here’s a glance at each event:

Livable Community Fair

The sixth annual Livable Community Fair, sponsored by the civic center and Safe Streets, will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

New this year, special presentations will be held in the Whitmore Room.

Sessions include: Friends of Pierce County, discussing land use/permits, 10 a.m.; Terry Lee, Pierce County Council, 11 a.m.; Pierce County Auditor’s office on animal control, noon; Peninsula High School Teens Empowered Against Meth, 1 p.m.; Debbie Bailey of Pierce County Emergency Preparedness, 2 p.m.

Outside, with times to be announced, Pierce County Fire Protection District 16 will demonstrate and discuss fire extinguishers, master gardeners will have an information booth and Pierce County Solid Waste will share tips on composting and recycling.

A container to collect food donations for Community House will be available near the main door.

Two Waters Arts Alliance will have an art display in the Whitmore Room.

More than 45 non-profit organizations on the Key Peninsula will have tables in the gym, with information and some activities. Special activities for children will also be available.

The mezzanine will hold the reptile collection, and Sparky the fire dog and clowns will meander among the crowd.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, cookies and soft drinks will be for sale from the kitchen.

13th Annual Lakebay Fuchsia Society Plant Sale

The Lakebay Fuchsia Society will host its 13th annual plant sale on the lawn from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 50 baskets of blooming or ready-to-bloom fuchsias, starts of both hardy and non-hardy fuchsias, including uprights and trailers, will be available in assorted colors and sizes.

Some perennials and annuals are also included in the sale.

The society planted and maintains the garden on the southwest corner of the lawn area at the civic center. The garden demonstrates the variety of hardy fuchsias that grow in the area, as well as a good selection of companion plants, to make an all-season display.

The Lakebay Fuchsia Society, under the direction of President Myvanwy Shirley, meets each month on the first Thursday at the Key Center Library, Brones Room, at 7 p.m. Guests are welcome.

KP Historical Museum

The Key Peninsula Historical Society Museum, celebrating Heritage Month, will host a display of vintage kitchen items during its open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Jean Cammon Findlay, co-author of the recently released “Mosquito Fleet of Southern Puget Sound,” will be on hand to sign books for sale.

“Heritage plants” from local homesteads and properties settled a century ago will be for sale, and surprise package items will be raffled off each hour.

The museum is open Thursday and Saturday, from 1 to 4 p.m., or by special appointment.

Quarterly meetings of the Historical Society include educational programs of local interest.
